Design Ideas to Create a Stylish First Apartment for Your 24-Year-Old So
Hello parents! Has your son reached a significant milestone—moving into his first apartment? This exciting chapter in his life calls for a space that reflects his personality, style, and newfound independence. To help you assist your son in designing a remarkable living space, we have put together a collection of design ideas that strike the perfect balance between functionality, comfort, and youthful flair. Let’s dive in!
My 24 year old son recently decided he was too old to be living at home and asked me to lend him a hand applying for some apartments. What he was really saying is that he might need my help. We spend an hour looking online one evening, and he ended up in an apartment that he found himself, and even set up the appointment to view it and scheduled the lease signing. But I loved that he made me feel like i could still help him and be involved in his life choices
Here is a list of ideas that we used to make his place feel like home.
- Embrace Minimalism: Encourage your son to embrace the beauty of minimalism in his apartment. Opt for clean lines, clutter-free spaces, and a neutral color palette as the foundation. This approach creates an open and airy atmosphere, making the apartment feel more spacious and organized.
- Choose Versatile Furniture: Maximize the functionality of limited space by selecting versatile furniture pieces. Consider a sofa bed or a futon for the living area, allowing it to double as a guest bedroom. Invest in a multipurpose desk that can serve as a workspace and a dining table. Versatile furniture ensures flexibility and makes the most of every square inch.
- Add Personality with Art and Decor: Encourage your son to express his individuality through art and decor. Hang his favorite artwork or photographs to create a gallery wall. Introduce vibrant throw pillows, rugs, or curtains to inject personality and add pops of color. Personal touches will make the space feel unique and welcoming.
- Create Functional Zones: Designate specific areas for different activities within the apartment. Define a cozy reading nook with a comfortable chair, side table, and a floor lamp. Dedicate a corner for a home office or study area with a desk and adequate lighting. By creating functional zones, your son can seamlessly transition between different activities while optimizing the use of space.
- Utilize Vertical Space: Make the most of vertical space to maximize storage and display opportunities. Install floating shelves or wall-mounted storage units to keep essentials organized and within reach. Hang hooks or racks for jackets, hats, and bags. Vertical storage solutions help keep the apartment tidy and prevent clutter from taking over.
- Incorporate Smart Home Technology: Embrace the convenience of smart home technology to elevate your son’s living experience. Consider installing smart lighting systems, voice-controlled assistants, or smart thermostats. These innovations not only add a modern touch but also offer enhanced comfort and efficiency.
- Don’t Forget About Lighting: Proper lighting can transform the ambiance of any space. Incorporate a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting throughout the apartment. Use floor lamps, table lamps, and pendant lights strategically to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Dimmer switches are also a great addition, allowing your son to adjust the lighting based on his mood or activity.
- Incorporate Greenery: Introduce some greenery to bring life and freshness into the apartment. Choose low-maintenance houseplants like succulents or pothos that thrive indoors. Not only do plants improve air quality, but they also add a touch of nature to the space, making it feel more vibrant and serene.
Starting the move
Unfortunately these days when you have a big job like moving finding all your buddies on moving day is a job in itself and nobody is available. But with planning and preparation a single person can actually get an apartment moved alone. Ive seen it done and its hard but it is doable.
Watching my first born son do this move was like watching him take his first steps all over again. We moved his older sister across the state but for some reason watching your son move out of his childhood home is an emotional time.
And he is moving out on his own. But who will make his peanut butter and jelly sandwiches?
To help make the process smoother and more manageable, here are some suggestions for moving to a new home on your own:
- Plan Ahead: Start by creating a detailed moving plan. Make a checklist of all the tasks you need to accomplish before, during, and after the move. This will help you stay organized and ensure nothing is overlooked.
- Declutter and Organize: Take the opportunity to declutter and get rid of unnecessary items before the move. Donate, sell, or discard items that you no longer need or use. This will make packing and unpacking easier and help you start fresh in your new home.
- Gather Packing Supplies: Collect all the necessary packing supplies in advance, including moving boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape, and markers. Having everything on hand will streamline the packing process and prevent unnecessary delays.
- Pack Efficiently: Pack room by room, labeling each box with its contents and the room it belongs to. This will make unpacking much easier. Start with non-essential items and gradually pack the essentials as moving day approaches. Using Amazons

- Enlist Help: Even if you’re moving by yourself, it can be beneficial to enlist the help of friends or family members. They can assist with heavy lifting, packing, or even just provide moral support during the process.
- Rent a Moving Truck: If you have a significant amount of furniture and belongings, consider renting a moving truck. This will allow you to transport everything in one trip, saving you time and effort. Be sure to book the truck well in advance to secure your preferred date.
- Protect Your Belongings: Take precautions to protect your fragile items during the move. Wrap breakables in bubble wrap or packing paper and use blankets or padding to protect furniture. Consider investing in moving blankets or furniture covers to minimize the risk of damage.
- Arrange Utilities and Change of Address: Contact utility providers to schedule the disconnection of services at your current home and the connection of services at your new home. Don’t forget to update your address with important entities like the post office, banks, insurance providers, and any subscriptions or memberships you have.
- Take Care of Yourself: Moving can be physically and emotionally demanding, so remember to take care of yourself throughout the process. Stay hydrated, take breaks when needed, and prioritize getting enough rest. Moving is a marathon, not a sprint.
- Unpack Systematically: Once you arrive at your new home, unpack systematically, starting with the essentials. Begin with the most important rooms, such as the bedroom and kitchen, and gradually work your way through the rest of the house. Take your time to create a functional and organized living space.
Moving to a new home by yourself requires careful planning and organization, no matter who you are or where you are moving, but with the right approach, it can be a successful and rewarding experience. Stay positive, stay focused, and embrace the excitement of starting fresh in your new space.
The apartment building he chose to rent from is 41 miles away form me but only 10 miles away from his work. His father would have probably tried talking him into buying a house instead of paying high rent. He is convinced that rent is throwing your money out of the window. To me I think that monthly payment gives you the return of a peace of mind. He can go to work and pay his bills and never fret the fear of something popping up that needs repaired or replaced. Renting is step he needs to take into his grown man responsibilities.
Three days into his move he has a blow up mattress on the living room floor because we haven’t had a chance to schedule moving his bedroom furniture yet. But he has invited his friend but for some reason or another he says she blocked him the very next day from every social networking site and the phone.
So the weekend comes and he wants his place to become more home. The bedrooms are medium size square with large closet and the master bedroom has a master bath. There is a nice size dining room, kitchen, and second bath. The living room is large enough for a 72 inch and sliding door out to the balcony. Which we put two pieces of the U-Max outdoor 7 piece patio Raton Furniture.
This way it is something he can begin with as he will someday maybe purchase a home or go bigger! Inside the living room there is plenty of room for a short sectional and long wall to hang his large television. Jacob, my 24 year old son, decided he wanted to go cozy with an electric burning fireplace table underneath the tv. My son liked the WAMPAT Fireplace TV Stand and Coffee Table Set of 2,Farmhouse Wood Electric Fireplace TV Console for TVs Up to 65 Inch,Rectangle Wood Center Table with Open Storage for Living Room, Rustic Brown.
What about wall decor
Some ideas for the walls in a mans apartment always think big! On a large room size wall we DIY’d shelving made out of 8 inch wood. We got the idea from the REJUVENATION website. You of course are welcome to purchase your choice of design or create your own by building with the like wood and brackets for your conducive wall size.
How about lites! Some extraordinary lighting design and masculine ambiance, check out the wall lights found on Amzon.com. Click here. This LED lighting is adjustable is neon and works in any room of the man cave!
Colors and shades
Now i know guys are not big on color coordinating which is not a problem. You do not have to choose color but how about a shade?? If you want to go to the hues of black, brown or grey add a little silver or chrome!
Put some gold hues in with the brown couch! It doesn’t have to feel like mom was picking everything out and a small flower will show more masculinity than a gun safe!
No matter what you do to make your man cave feel like home, DO it with your own style and personality and remember moms the best thing you can do for your sons place to be homey is put your cold meatloaf or his favorite dish in his fridge. A son is a son until he finds a wife. Give him a chance to find his own women to fill his home.
I hope this helped bring some ideas to surface and if your just getting a new place or moving again for the tenth time. Filling an apartment for a man can be just as much a design issue as for any woman because you are putting yourself in a place that is a new home! Enjoy yourself building your space, building a home.
