What is Uninsured Motorist coverage?
You must have liability insurance to be compliant for driving on any road. Liability insurance is coverage that will protect you if you are at fault in an accident. You can insure with liability coverage at different limit amounts such as 25/50/50. State minimum liability coverage are the lowest limits of coverage you can carry.
Uninsured Motorist coverage protects you as a policy holder if you are hit by a driver who has no auto insurance. This includes hit and run accidents.
Underinsured Motorist coverage is a coverage that can be included with the uninsured motorist. This coverage protects you if the other driver does not have enough insurance to cover your claims. Usually uninsured motorist will only cover the bodily injury part of an accident.
Do I need to carry UM/UIM coverage?
The states that mandate uninsured motorist coverage include WV, NY, SC, NC, VT, DC, CT, NJ, NH, RI, VA IL Oregon MN, NE, SD, FL, ME, ND, WI, MA, KS. Other states require a written request to reject this coverage. It is up to you if you want to accept or reject the additional coverage. Some policies will only cover the UM/UIM coverage for bodily injury, unless stated that it is covering property damage.
If you have more than one vehicle on your policy you can stack your uninsured motorist coverage. This is when you take the limits of each vehicle on the policy and and stack them to make the coverage higher.
